Gunnish Question

Just out of curiosity, does/has anyone out there in the wide wide world of the interwebz sleep/slept with a gun under their pillow?  And why?

Closest I'll do is on the night stand. I generally sleep with one arm under the pillow anyway so I wouldn't trust for #1 the gun to be where I expect it to be if I get woken up by danger, and #2. That the gun won't wake me up with loud noises.

I suspect this is bullshit invented by pulp writers, and imitated by wannabes.

I slept with one under a great big teddy bear for years.

When backpacking in bear country, I kept my 44 mag under the clothes I was using as a pillow; kept it dry and handy (I never backpacked with a tent).

I've slept many times with an M-16 in my fart sack. But the closest thing to under the pillow for me is the table next to the bed.

Under the pillow in the theatrical sense? Are you crazy? That's about as unsafe a scenario as one could imagine.

That said, I have slept with a pistol under a pillow. Many times. And, in every case, whichever pistol I slept upon was holstered either in a SafePacker under the pillow or in my Maxpedition Mongo, which served as the pillow.

Usually while traveling or camping.

The biggest reason, though, is because I can.

If I'm going to have it under my head, I'll slide it between the mattress and the box spring.

But usually in the drawer of the nightstand.

On the nightstand, against the wall, or holstered on my person - but under the pillow wouldn't work for me. I sleep with an arm under the pillow, and toss and turn plenty.

Nope. On the nightstand next to the bed. There's usually a 2nd gun on the floor next to the bed also.

I guess I could see why you'd do it if you didn't have a nightstand thingy. And it seems like a DA revolver would be a better idea than something with a tichier trigger.

I also seem to remember reading about some sort of pillow holster that was specifically made for this.

But I agree, it seems more theatrical than anything else, for the most part.

I carried a 44 mag Redhawk with a 5.5" barrel. It was in the holster, but I kept it under my "pillow" because I knew exactly where it was. Since it was a DA and in the holster, there was no chance of a ND. When in bear country, I kept it stoked with 320gr cast-lead semi-wadcutters; had an interesting recoil, but made a helluva thump when it hit.

Usta be a Big Honkin' Knife. But I stopped when I moved onto a military ship wherein I slept in a locked room so as to keep the well attended to. Good times. Anonymous cuz google won't let me sign in to comment even when I'm already signed in.
