Blog Bleg

I am seriously considering moving to a wordpress blog. Made an account and started setting up a blog, even. I am wondering, what would be the best way to proceed from here? Email people like Jay G and North who keep a reciprocal blog roll and have a large audience to get the word out--or is that just being pathetic and attention whoring? Just switch and hope people figure it out? Would it be beneficial to try to figure out how to get the google follower widget shoehorned into wordpress--especially considering a big reason driving this is that I'm getting sick of google? I know that I just recently made a lot of new readers via Stephen--would this just leave those folks in the dust?

These are the things I am thinking about, and I welcome what anyone else out there has to say.

Honestly? I have a Wordpress-based blog and I really do not like it.

I like the ease of posting to blogger. I also like the ease of replying in blogger - some WP blog owners make it difficult or impossible to reply on their blog - so I just don't. (One blogger requires me to sign in to WP to post a reply. I won't. He has nearly zero replies. I doubt he has the brain power to figure out why.)

Even worse is word verification pictures that I type over and over but they are too unclear.

Blogger/Google can annoy me, but WP annoys me even more.

Clarification: 'North' is Blogger. I also have a WP blog under a different name.

But if you ask I will whore you like the feathered pimp that I am.

Tried the hosted Wordpress blog for awhile long ago, but wasn't hugely impressed at the time with it. Only reason Google won out with me is because of its (then) convenience. A bit pissed about their Facebook-like practices recently of interface changes for the sake of change.

If I had resources, I'd just stand up my own server somewhere and drop a standalone wordpress or movabletype on it.

Yeah the wordpress UI is a bit funkier, but I'm pretty sure that blogger is going to go the way of reader soon--as in, I hate it. As for your commenting complaints, can you not turn off the word verification, or at least make it not as intrusive?

I will keep messing around with it, so We Will See.

I had a friend switch to Wordpress, lasted, oh, two days before he came back to Blogger.

I like Blogger, I just hate the new interfaces.

I've not bothered to play around with WordPress yet, so I can't help there, but as for moving: Email, or otherwise contact folks who you know have you on their blogroll, at the very least so they can update the link, at best so they can mention it in a post. Do a "last post" here that contains a link to the new, so anyone following an old link can still find you.

DMD: Put up a post here with a link to there ... or at least post the address. Readers can bookmark the new location

North: I have a WP blog - I think you visit - and I think I make it easy for comments and cross-links (via options settings), not that I "advertise" the site (I block all search engines). I guess if it's not easy or readers have problems, I'm not aware of it and I won't hear about it ...

I'm uneasy with using too much Google so I don't post on Blogger. I've also read more complaints about Blogger - from bloggers on B - than WP. Many of the blogs I track are on Blogger though

Re, the word thingy: I get that on more Blogger posts than WP... like this one just below where I'm replying ("sursedn" right now).

I do have to be logged into my WP account to leave comments on the majority of Blogger sites...like right now.

Maybe we need to all compare notes...

I also have a commercial WP site which I've taken off-line.

Lazy. Haven't changed domain names but I keep the account active.

I'm supposedly a high-level techie, but I sometimes have trouble with this "user" stuff and don't have a 15-year old around to laugh at me and show me what I should be doing.

actually of all the word verifications I've delt with Blogger's is easy, letters are a bit stretched, but not so much as to be unreadable, unlike so many others where its a PAIN to try to figure out the letters.

Some WP blogs seem to require a log in (which means I don't comment since I've not a WP account), and others just require me to put my email down, so I assume there's a setting for it.

Wordpress has more security issues.

bluesun said...

Security issues, how? Because the main reason I'm not digging blogger is The Great Google Interlink.

Hey, Borepatch. I listen to you when you discuss computer security. How about a post on your site discussing security of WP vs B?

(Sorry DMD)

Sorry, I'm a bit late. I made the switch to self hosted WP from Blogger and am very glad I did. I don't have any experience with Wordpress.com though since I host my own. I roll quite a bit of my own theme stuff too. Not because I'm good at that or anything, just because I'm picky and stubborn and will dig until I can figure out how to make it look like I want.

Self hosting would be the next step, for sure. I do notice that WP.com is slightly less customizable than what I generally can do in blogger (fonts and so forth). Not really enough to bother me, though.
