Avast! It be Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Arrr, on this day ev'ry year, I has to shackle me purse, lest I plunder meself a swivel gun. I could then keep those scurvy buggers of the East India Comp'ny off of me decks.

One thing that really bothers me is the improper use of "Avast." Avast means "Stop." "Avast ye" means, "You, Stop!"

Except that a person who actually worked on a ship would know that "avast" means stop. That's why pirates would use the work, it's a nautical term. When non-nautical types try to talk like a pirate and use "Avast" incorrectly, they just sound stupid.
