In the two months leading up to and preparing for D-day, the allied air forces lost around 2,000 planes, and 12,000 men.
I always like the look of the P-47 with the
D-Day Stripes. Big, mean, and not afraid of being conspicuous.
Picture from the Hill Air Force Base website. I would have put up my own picture of this very same plane and from this very same angle, but blogger is crapping out again and won't let me load any pictures.

Always been a fan of the Jug and the Spit instead of the Mustang. Sort of the "rapier and bludgeon" vibe, y'see....
But my fave was the 'Widow....
I'm a nonconformist. So the mustang and the B-17 and the "popular" planes don't do so much for me. If we were going with only air corps planes I'd have to stick with the P-47, I think, but overall my favorite fighter is the Corsair. Biggest engine on the smallest body. But then if we were going to include bombers, I'd definitely have to go with the B-25. There's just something special about a plane that in some configurations could have 14x.50-caliber machine guns pointing in one direction that appeals to me.
And now I've airplane geeked out. Sorry bout that, I'll go back into my hole...
