Books of 2011: Monster Hunter Vendetta

What can I say--read it last year, but since I just read Alpha, I felt the need to go back and re-read it. It's almost been a year, after all, and I did read it very fast the last time. I think I read it twice as slowly this time.

I stand by what I said last time about the Monster Hunter Books: "Once again, [Larry] takes all of the horror movie cliches and fantasy fairy tale creatures, mashes them together with a group of badass goofballs who have all of the coolest toys, and purees it with a blender made out of explosives to serve you a piping-hot cocktail of pure awesome."

If you haven't read it, what's your problem?

I had complained about hearing so much about these books, but not hearing any substance. Not that I expect bloggers to do book reviews, but I had hoped to read at least a few gun bloggers mention WHY they liked the books, as you have here.

So I whined a bit about that. I was given some helpful words from a few people. Those were enough to entice me to look into the books a little more. To see if the books might be something I would read.

When I did find more information about the books I decided to purchase all three of the MH books from Amazon.

I didn't say anything negative about the books or the author. Despite this, the author "Larry" decided to meet my complaints with insults. Instead of taking the path that he could have taken to talk about his books to convince me to purchase them (I had them on order already) he chose a rather immature name-calling sarcastic tirade.

Unfortunate. I was convinced that the books might be good. They very well might be. But when an author chooses to personally insults me it paints quite a picture of the character of the author.

The three books arrived and they sit unread on a shelf. I'm happy Amazon has a return policy.

I'm glad you enjoyed the books. I hope you find authors like Jim Butcher to your liking, too.

I've got Alpha already, but I'm waiting for my daughter to finish reading it so I can dig in. Hey, it's her birthday present. The least I can do is let her read it first.

North, I'm surprised by your experience with Larry. I've had nothing but polite communications from him. Maybe you caught him on a bad day?

DaddyBear: Two different calendar days.

I can understand that he would want to defend his books, but I said nothing about the contents of them. I complained peripherally that I kept hearing about the books without any substance. That was a matter of chance, though.

He chose to put words in my mouth and twist what I was saying to support his childish outburst. There is no way I'll enjoy his books at this point. I was thinking of gifting the books to someone, but printing a return label is easier.

Meanwhile I'll enjoy other respectable authors.

North, I'm sorry to hear that. It sounds like Larry lost someone who would be good customer and you lost a good book.

DB, I suppose you should be nice to her, if it's her birthday and all. If my experience is any guide, though, you won't have to wait too long...
